Key Ingredients for Air Fryer Turnip Fries
Turnip: At the heart of our air fryer turnip fries is the humble turnip itself. These root veggies are not only crunchy but also bring a slightly peppery flavor that transforms when they’re air fried. Opt for fresh turnips, as they have a sweeter and more robust flavor than older ones, making your fries truly delightful.
Olive Oil: A touch of olive oil is essential in this recipe. It allows the turnip fries to crisp up beautifully while providing a hint of richness. Just a small drizzle enhances the flavor without overwhelming the natural taste of turnips.
Salt: A sprinkle of salt goes a long way! It not only enhances the flavor but also helps to bring out the natural sweetness of the turnips. Consider experimenting with different types of salt like garlic salt for an extra flavor boost.
Seasoning: Whether you prefer classic choices like paprika or something bolder like cayenne, your seasonings will elevate these air fryer turnip fries to a whole new level. A personal favorite of mine is a mix of paprika and black pepper for that perfect kick!

Cooking Tips and Notes
When diving into the world of air fryer turnip fries, the experience starts with choosing the right air fryer for your culinary journey. Many models vary in capacity and power, so if you’re prepping for a group, consider a large-capacity model. A powerful air fryer with adjustable temperature settings will ensure your turnip fries cook evenly, while models with a basket design often allow for better air circulation, resulting in perfectly crisp fries.
Achieving the perfect texture for your air fryer turnip fries is an art. Cut the turnips into uniform pieces to ensure they cook evenly—aim for about 1/4 inch thick. Give them a brief soak in water to release excess starch, which helps them crisp up beautifully. Pat them dry before seasoning to ensure maximum crispiness throughout the cooking process.
When it comes to seasoning, don’t be shy! Olive oil is your best friend; it helps the spices adhere and enhances the flavor. For a delightful twist, try a mix of garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Experiment with herbs like rosemary or thyme for an aromatic touch. Remember, less is more—start with a little seasoning and adjust according to your taste preference. Happy frying!

Air Fryer Turnip Fries
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 2 servings 1x
- Diet: vegetarian
Description
Delicious and healthy air fryer turnip fries, perfect as a snack or side dish.
Ingredients
- 2 small sized turnips
- 1 T olive oil
- 1 tsp. Spike Seasoning (see notes)
- to taste salt
- 1/4 cup mayo
- 2 T sugar-free ketchup
Instructions
- Choose two small turnips that look plump and firm.
- Preheat Air Fryer for 5 minutes at 375F/190C. (Some Air Fryers may not need to be reheated.)
- For easy peeling, start by cutting off the top and bottom of each turnip so it will sit flat.
- Then use a sharp knife to slice off the skin of the turnip all the way around.
- Keeping the turnip sitting flat, cut slices that are about 1/2 inch thick.
- Then cut those slices into fries that are about 1/2 inch wide.
- Put the cut fries into a bowl and toss with olive oil and Spike Seasoning (affiliate link), or other all-purpose seasoning blend.
- Spread fries out in the Air Fryer basket, carefully arranging them in a single layer.
- I fit all the fries in one batch in my Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) but if your Air Fryer basket is smaller you might have to cook them in two batches.
- Cook the turnip fries for 10 minutes, then remove the basket and carefully turn all the fries.
- Cook the fries for 5 more minutes; then check and turn any that are getting too brown.
- Cook about 2 minutes more, or until the turnip fries are nicely browned and cooked through.
- While fries cook, stir together Sugar-Free Ketchup and Mayo to make Utah Fry Sauce. (We like more mayo than ketchup as you can see, adjust to the amount of ketchup you prefer.)
- Season finished fries with salt to taste and serve hot.
Notes
- Spike Seasoning can be replaced with any all-purpose seasoning blend.
